Home >> Direct ServicesSecond Chance / Adopt A SchoolSince its inception, the Second Chance / Adopt A School program has played a significant role in thwarting efforts to organize new gangs. In partnership with the Boston Police Department’s Youth Violence Strike Force and Boston School Police, clergy, and volunteers from area churches make anti-violence presentations at local schools. Trained volunteers also provide counseling on topics such as peer conflict and gang mediation. Teams make weekly visits to the homes of youth at high risk for criminal behavior before they actually get into trouble. Once in the homes, we connect high-risk youth and their families with needed services on a case-by-case basis. Our familiarity with the schools personnel and students enables us to spot emerging crisis and issues and work on dealing with them. For example, in 2000, Second Chance helped turn Dorchester High School around, decreasing the school’s incidents of violent and disruptive behavior by 87.5 %. |
